The Internet Ruined My Life

The Internet Ruined My Life

Can your life change when you go viral online? The idea that you can become famous for the all the wrong reasons seems impossible, but it’s something that happens more often than you think.

Once something goes viral online, it can’t be stopped. This is a chilling statement that flashed across my screen recently and it’s something that had me plugged into a social media reality check while watching the Syfy show, “The Internet Ruined My Life.”

Social media is a significant driving force we take for granted. We make decisions every day that we don’t think twice about, but those decisions have consequences. The choices we make when it comes to posting videos, comments, memes, and pics on social media can impact our lives in significant ways. Your choices can come back to haunt you.

You never know who is watching and that is why it’s important to think before you post. It’s something I think about often but it’s never something I took seriously until watching The Internet Ruined My Life.

Viral success stories flood our feeds, but what we don’t hear about are those viral instances that go wrong. These become a reminder that social media is a powerful tool. These stories also demonstrate how and why cyber-bulling is real.

Honestly, cyber-bulling never made sense to me; I could never understand or comprehend how words on a screen from a complete stranger could affect a person to the point they wanted to live no longer or isolate themselves. However, after watching this eye-opening show, I have new perspective and understanding of cyber-bulling.

Conversation after conversation, it’s still hard to believe that a single post or click can ruin your life. “Ruined” might be a bit dramatic, but it’s true. Our choices online can have great affect, either positively or negatively.

Although the stories on the show might be extreme, it’s a reality check for all. If you have time this summer, I highly recommend checking out this show; it’s now available on Syfy On-Demand.
