I have a love-hate relationship with suits. Every time I think of wearing one, I think of a funeral, a wedding or corporate America, which I could not stand working in. That’s why I’m in the creative field.

Now, being in the creative field and being a business owner, I realized I have my art business, and then there’s the business of art. You have to understand the business of art. You can’t be so consumed with the creation part. I feel that’s an upside and a downside. Obviously, being a creator, you want to have a free spirit. You’re using your creative expression to create something out of nothing, and I think that’s one of the best things. But as I develop my art business, and just business in general, I realized you never know when a business meeting might happen, so it’s always great to have a suit ready.

You don’t necessarily have to wear a suit. There are tons of ways to dress up for a business meeting, like a blazer with black slacks, which I love. Then you have the TikTokers, fashionistas, influencers, whatever you want to call them, who tell you what palette to get. The bright beige, the blue, the brown, the burgundy. With a palette you don’t have to buy a lot of suits. Buy a couple of blazers in the main colors, the blues, the browns, the khaki and beige, the burgundies and black, and you can do a whole bunch of different mix and matches with funky blazers.

Recently, I decided to go on Amazon and pick out a suit. It was a three-piece, and I picked a size larger than what I normally pick. I will say, men’s suits are astronomically expensive. Some of y’all men like custom stuff, and when you can afford it, go for it. But when you’re on a budget, when you’re trying to get your startup or your business up and running, you ain’t got time for $500 suits.

I was always told you can get a cheap suit as long as it’s tailored nicely. So I bought a three-piece suit from Amazon, tried it on and had it tailored. I went to the opera recently. Hopefully you read my post on my trip to the opera. I looked stunning. I spent $69 or so on the suit and $100 and something for tailoring, so I would say it was about a $200 suit. It looks great, and the fabric is wonderful.

If you get it tailored, you’re going to pay a pretty penny, especially with a good tailor. But let’s compare. A $60 suit plus maybe $200 for a tailor, you pay $260 versus $500. I’ll go with the $260. Since I had a three-piece, I had all the pieces, and I wanted certain things done to my suit, so it cost me a little more. But I think you can probably do well if you just get the right jacket size and bigger pants, so you don’t have to do a lot of taking in. Mine had lining in it, which is a great thing, so it cost a little extra. I had to get the pants taken in and taken up, and the jacket taken in a little bit, because I bought a size larger so I could get it tailored to me. And, you know, I’m out here losing weight. It looks and fits amazing, and I didn’t have to pay a lot of money for it.

When you’re choosing on Amazon, there’s a technique. I look at everything, every recent review. Unfortunately, if the review is negative in the beginning, I move on. And I like reviews that have pictures. If a person is in the picture with the clothes on, I can dissect it and look at it from a different point of view, and that’s how I also determine if it’s a good choice for me or not. Reviews and pictures of the actual product are your friend.

You don’t always have to go for the most expensive suit, especially if you’re short on cash, running low, and you just need one to put in the closet for that unfortunate occasion. Or that fortunate unfortunate occasion, a wedding. Who likes those? LOL, I’m joking. Or that ad hoc meeting. It’s always nice to have a suit you can throw on.

My preference, if anybody knows, is black. We know what people wear black for. My friend even laughed and said I looked like a waiter. That’s another reason why I don’t like suits. But I have two in the closet. You should at least have one or two for when you need them.

You can go on Amazon and buy one a size larger. Go to a really good tailor and get it tailored. You can get a good, honest suit for a low price instead of having to spend a lot of money. Hey, we all don’t have it like that. You gotta cut corners, but you don’t have to look busted. You gotta look good all the time. I don’t care if you have a dollar or a penny in your pocket. It’s important to look good, because when you feel good, everything else flows. My motto is, today is the best day ever because you’re a part of it. And that means you have to be grateful. So if today is the best day ever and you’re a part of it, wouldn’t you want to dress well for the best day ever? Because life is short. So dress for the day.
