Coffee and the benefits of drinking more than one cup a day is something many coffee drinkers are unaware of. Acclaimed journalist Bill Gifford, contributing editor for Outside Magazine and author of a new book entitled, Spring Chicken Stay Young Forever (or Die Trying) has written a book we believe you all should read…

Book, Bill Gifford, Health, Coffee“Spring Chicken Stay Young Forever (or Die Trying) is a full-throttle, high-energy ride through the latest research, popular mythology, and ancient wisdom on aging and lifespan–from wrinkles and baldness down to the innermost workings of cells that examines how human beings might be able to live longer, healthier lives.” (taken from Hachette Book Group) Coffee, Starbucks, Bill Gifford, Book, Spring Chicken Stay Young Forever (or Die Trying).”

Gifford discusses anti-aging science and the breakthroughs and dangerous deceptions. For example, it was fascinating to read about coffee and its potential benefits.

The old notion that coffee was bad for us is because people would have coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other hand. However, when they took away the cigarette they found that coffee was beneficial to good health.

In a 2012 New England Journal of Medicine study it documented that the more coffee you drink the more protected against mortality you are, per Gifford. There are actual studies showing that drinking coffee lowers the risk of dying from a wide range of problems: diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

2 cups of your coffee a day cuts your risk of colon cancer by 25%

3 cups of your coffee a day cuts your risk of liver cancer by 40%

4 cups of your coffee a day cuts your risk of of head/neck by 39%

5 cups of your coffee a day cuts your risk of of brain by 40%

6 cups of your coffee a day cuts your risk of of prostate cancer by 60% (men specifically)

Caffeinated or decaffeinated? Gifford indicated that the New England study found no difference between caffeinated or decaffeinated. Although, Dr. Oz appeared surprised that having 6 cups of coffee doesn’t create other side effects; leading me to believe that more than 3 cups a day is probably too much caffeine in one day.

As an herbal tea drinker I will consider switching up from time to time so I can take advantage of the benefits of coffee.
