Many of the popular Irish whiskeys consumed in the US are blended ones. However, one style of Irish whiskey is the Single Malt Irish Whisky.
If you haven’t heard of Castle Brands (Boru Vodka, Pallini, Jefferson’s, Gosling’s Rum) and you like whiskey or want to explore, now is the time to try some of their single malts Knappogue Castle Whiskey.
I recently attended a tasting where I was offered three vintages and I’d like to share my thoughts:
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey
Of the three vintages, this was my favorite. It was flavorful, having a fruity taste of apples, pears, and peaches, combined with honey. Great tasting with a light flavor. I’d definitely go back for more.
Knappogue Castle 14 Year Old Twin Wood Single Malt Irish Whiskey
This one is aged in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks. The 14 Year Old Twin Wood definitely has the distinctness of having been aged in a sherry cask and it is pretty dominant when tasting it. There is also a bit more spicy flavor with this one.
Knappogue Castle 16 Year Old Twin Wood Single Malt Irish Whiskey
Similar to the 14 Year Old Twin Wood the 16 Year Old Twin Wood is aged in two different casks, about 14 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then almost 2 years in sherry casks. This one is darker than the 14 Year Old Twin Wood but it is more successful at offering a more integrated flavor.
If you are already familiar with Kappogue Castle, be on the lookout for their new packaging design. The ingredients and flavors are the same, only the packaging is going to look different.
