Is anyone ever an expert at dating?
It is always strange when I hear someone say, “I’m a dating expert.” Honestly, I don’t believe someone can be an expert at dating, especially when dating today is nothing like how our grandparents dated, and oddly, nothing like how our parents dated. If my grandparents were alive today, they would find how we date amusing. Today, we can pick up our mobile devices and look for: love, sex, and even someone to date, it’s nothing like the 1960s.
It’s hard to be a dating expert when the dating process changes as quickly as the technology we use. Right before you’re comfortable with your new mobile device, you’re teased with the latest, more sleek version. Within months, you’re wondering whether you made the right choice. How funny is that? It sounds like dating today!
Once you meet Mr. or Ms. Wonderful on a dating app, you date for a while, but quickly you start to wonder, is he or she right for me? And once the new model types join these sites you become inundated with more options, and the more options you have, the more you want.
Several years ago, I had a blog named, “All About Dating,” which ranked #5 on the Best Dating Blogs of 2010 list by DatingSite.Org. Afterward, did I consider myself a dating expert, hell ya! Back then, I wrote about the pain and unfortunate experiences I had from dating, and especially as an African-American gay male who is attracted to white guys. After pouring all of my emotions into my dating blog, I was unable to write about dating. That dating expert status quickly was erased. I didn’t know what I was going to do.
Our negative dating experiences are what make us all dating experts. Although, I do believe, staying abreast of new dating techniques, conflict resolution methods, and ways to communicate with a partner are the skills required to have successful dating experiences.
I am far from being a self-help advocate, but I also believe in the saying, “knowledge is power.” There is one book that helped me become my very own dating expert. I purchased this book a long time ago, a book that became my bible when I needed dating tips. It’s a book I credit to my becoming a so-called dating expert. Although I don’t believe anyone can be a dating expert, this is a resource I refer to when I need dating tips.
The book is, Love Between Men: Enhancing Intimacy and Resolving Conflicts in Gay Relationships by Rik Isensee. The book was an acclaimed best-seller in 1990. If you’re seeking relationship answers and want to become a dating expert in your own life; I highly recommend reading this book.
