Music, Solange, A Seat At The Table

When you have a famous sister like Beyonce, establishing your individual identity is crucial to keeping your self-expression separate from the shadows of someone so well-known.

Solange Knowles, in my opinion, takes pride in her sister’s accomplishments but has always been an individual. Her success is far greater than many other artists with sibling celebrities who struggle being in the same field.

Solange has been making music for years but hers has been a modest career. That’s not due to her accord but the industry’s ability (or inability) to market her the way she should be. None-the-less, she has never stopped being a pioneer when it comes to fashion, music, and the creative process. If you follow her on social media like I do it is apparent her artistic aesthetic is uniquely original and beyond her years.

Solange released her new album, A Seat At The Table, on Friday. And from all the posts from friends on my timeline, celebrity tweets, and my excitement, this is the must-have album for the fall!

And the album was worth the wait. It took Solange almost four years to complete this project. The 21-tracks on the album were written by Solange, with heavy-hitters like Lil Wayne, Q-Tip, The-Dream, Dev Hynes and Kelly Rowland as special guests throughout.

This is truly a magical journey through music and life. She describes the album as a “project on identity, empowerment, independence, grief and healing.”

One critic writes, “A Seat At The Table is an excellent album, with a sprawling orchestration that gently transitions between Solange’s ethereal vocals. The lyrical content takes on racial tensions, romantic veins, and self-empowerment. It never, however, crosses the line of controversy the way some others have recently. A beautiful effort that is pleasing to the ear as well as educational and sexy.”

I highly recommend pouring yourself a glass of wine and experiencing what I call an incredible album.
