So, summer is over. Sure there are some places where the temperatures are still above 80 degrees (thanks global warming), but it’s after Labor Day and it’s time to get back to school and work. So, I dug through my latest releases and remixes and decided to program one last party mix before we all become bombarded with the pressures of everyday adult life. Let’s get started…
The best way to get the party started is with an anthem. “Dance Motherfucker” by Garmiani featuring Jermaine Dupree works quite nicely. It’s got the energy and that frat boy waving a beer over his head while everyone yells “chug, chug, chug!”
No party mix is complete without “Party People” by AudioRock vs. Yellow Claw. I think the title says it all. Definitely keeping the energy going.
Every now and then a Club track from yesteryear gets a makeover and enters the charts again. This is the case with “Put ‘Em High” by Stonebridge featuring Therese. Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso really updated this anthem.
And the remix factory keeps pumpin’ ’em out. The Diego Mas Rework of Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic, “Let’s Groove” brings all the flava of the original with some extra percussion to satisfy a more youthful audience. I love when a song from my youth is introduced to today’s scene…only if it is done right, though.
I think I had heard the name G-Eazy maybe once or twice, but had never heard any of his music. Then late one night I was flipping channels and came across the video for “You Don’t Own Me” by Grace featuring G-Eazy. I actually thought I was watching Macklemore. It was in black and white and he was styled exactly like Macklemore. It wasn’t until I saw him on the MTV Awards with Britney Spears for her performance of “Make Me” that I realized that he wasn’t Macklemore. So, I looked up his latest track and found the Marc Stout & Scott Svejda remix of his song “Drifting” featuring Chris Brown & Tory Lanez. One word…HOT!
Always remember…what’s old is new. That’s why it seems many new DJ/Producers love to reach back to the 90s to recreate the “hits”. You’ve already heard me bitch about the rebranding of classic hits, but today’s track doesn’t rebrand or ignore the original. It just uses the vocal hook and loses the rap. “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems” by Lootz is not half bad. It’ll do in a pinch.
Now…I didn’t care too much for Meghan Trainor in the beginning. In fact, I thought she was going to join the ranks of one-hit-wonders in musical history. But with each new release, I’m loving her a little bit more each day. The Track Asazzins remix of “Me Too” has to be one of my favorites right now. It’s sassy and the beats are just everything!
One of the things I hated the most about this year’s MTV Awards was DJ Khaled! Yes, he produces great Hip Hop tracks, but he’s hella-annoying with a mic in his hands. If I heard him say “We da best” one more time…somebody was gonna get hurt! The only thing on the broadcast more annoying was Key & Peele. But the Spindiana Jones Surprise Edit which is a mashup of “All I Do Is Win” by Khaled and “Keep Calm” by Jay Karama really turned me out.
With all of his dick pic online, I kinda hate myself for liking another Justin Bieber track. But the Scene Kings remix of “Cold Water” by Major Lazer featuring the Biebs is actually kinda good. I guess because he’s such an ass and knows that young girls and creepy old guys drool when his name is mentioned, I just don’t want to like anything with his name on it. I mean…if I’m gonna look for a dick pic I’d rather see Orlando Bloom.
I tried to Google “Teardrops” by Dawn Tallman with the hopes in finding out what song it was derived from (cuz it sounds so much like something I had heard before…perhaps an old Sister Sledge song). Unfortunately, there is no Wikipedia page for this release. So, I still haven’t figured it out, but I love the Stonebridge Classic House Vocal just the same.
And Christina Aguilera’s contribution to the Netflix series “The Get Down” is really hot on my playlist these days as well. “Telepathy” is the soundtrack to the first gay kiss on the show between Jaden Smith & Noah Le Gros. I actually saw the clip online before seeing the actual episode or receiving the Moto Blanco Club Mix. The scene is also sprinkled with The House of Xtravaganza. My problem with this series is the mis-information being passed off as facts. Plenty of inconsistencies in the storyline with fads and lingo that didn’t exist in 1977. I believe Baz Luhrmann is trying to include too many stories and actual history in one series. But there are some cute tracks in the mix.
Our next selection is the Kahikko & Jespr remix of “Closer” by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. Just one of those catchy songs that you can’t get out of your head. The great thing is that I found a version that I can live with. So, at least I can dance to it while it is stuck in my head.
The last Bob Sinclar track that I really liked was “World, Hold On”. I know he had a great run for while, but he just didn’t do it for me. But I kinda like his latest release, “Someone Who Needs Me”. I’m actually playing the original mix.
And to close out my mix I decided to program the benefit track for the victims of the Orlando shooting which is a group ensemble cover of Dionne Warwick’s classic “What The World Needs Now” by Broadway For Orlando. My buddy Mike Cruz did a great job with his remix. This track is a good reminder that we are still one community and that we can’t let this be forgotten with a hash tag or a meme. And with September 11th coming it really is a message that will never get old. As I listen to the news and reports about how people are treating each other these days, I think that Burt Bacharach’s lyrics have more relevance than ever today.
