Erectile Dysfunction, Vitamin D

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a topic most men are uncomfortable with. It’s not uncommon for men over 40 to experience ED. That’s a scary thought for me since I am 44. Fortunately, everything is still working just fine. However, there are times when things seem to not work as well as they should.

I have read countless articles on the topic and I learned that low levels of a certain nutrient may cause the crown jewels not to work when you need them to.

This might be more prevalent during the spring months. As we shake off the winter blues, we’ve been deprived of sunlight. Sunlight is a source of vitamin D, a vitamin that can turn off the lights in the bedroom.

Men’s Health states, “New research from Italy suggests that low levels of vitamin D may increase your risk of erectile dysfunction. When researchers tested 143 men with varying degrees of erectile dysfunction, they found that nearly half of them were coming up deficient in D, and only one in five had optimal levels of the nutrient.”

Here is an interesting fact, an estimated 20 to 30 million American men suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED), a term used to signify the inability to attain or maintain the erection of the penis sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Often men do not care much about their health until it affects their sex life. I go to the doctor regularly. A change in my sex drive is alarming to me so I’m going to head over to my doctor as quickly as possible.

Insufficient levels of vitamin D may spur the production of free radicals called superoxide ions, according to University of Milan study author Alessandra Barassi, M.D., and her research team. These free radicals deplete your nitric oxide, a molecule that helps your blood vessels function properly.

Low levels of vitamin D make it hard to get hard.

Larry Lipshultz, M.D., a Men’s Health urology advisor stated, “Nitric oxide causes the blood vessels to relax, which increases the blood flow and causes an erection under normal circumstances.”

Without the proper amount of nitric acid running through your blood vessels, the blood vessels may not relax which can prevent a man from having an erection.

It hasn’t been determined whether vitamin D in men with normal erectile functioning acts as a preventive measure to delay ED. We recommend consulting with your doctor if you are experiencing ED.

Lastly, the study recommended taking supplements to get back to the optimal level of 30 ng/mL or above.
