A year ago, if you asked me who Selena Gomez was, I would have no clue. It’s not out of disrespect but when you’re a 40-something African-American male, the Disney years are long past you, so you have no clue who is who and especially when you’re not a part of the artist’s target market.
Of course, I’ve heard the name, Selena Gomez. However, it was mostly when it was gossip pertaining to her on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber. Anything outside of that, I had no clue who or why she was famous.
Fast-forward, a year into the future, a young woman releases a track called, ‘Hands to Yourself,’ track I listen to non-stop. The sultry beats and lyrics are something only a person of a particular age could appreciate. It’s also the moment when I started to pay attention to Selena Gomez, detach her from the gossip, and began to recognize her talent.
Oftentimes when there is a generational gap, it’s difficult to connect with some artists and their music. Either the lyrics are not mature enough, the beats are for teeny-boppers or their vocals have not matured.
In Selena’s case, she is killing us with kindness, her maturity and she is appealing to a boarder audience. I am guilty. When I heard ‘Hands to Yourself’ I was positive that would be the last time I would download a Selena Gomez song.
I was wrong. I watched her new video ‘Kill Em With Kindness’ and afterward, I decided that I am a fan as long as she keeps producing sounds that appeal to the mature music listener. The dramatic beats and vocals pull me in more and more.
Selena Gomez has my attention, and I hope she keeps it. Her last two tracks are the reason, I’ve decided to download the entire CD.
