Since Oh Wonder published it’s highly popular video for “Without You” on October 26, 2015, it has had over 10.5M views on YouTube.
What brought me to this singer-songwriter, alt-pop duo, however, was their more recent video, published on January 25, 2016, “Lose It.” The video features five dancers who were invited to audition for a video. Little did the dancers realize that they were actually starring in the video. All at once, there is something simple, complex, and special going on in this video and I’m drawn to listen and watch, over and over again.
One YouTube comment by ScribeSlendy gets to my point, “I think this video fit the song perfectly. The song is (in my opinion) about the spontaneity of life, and just letting what happens happen. So the natural reactions of the dancers to the sudden change in set, their laughter at the confetti and dancers, it blended right in.”
On September 1, 2014, Oh Wonder members Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht released their first single, “Body Gold.” As reported by the Seattle Times and Wikipedia, their unorthodox approach was to build a loyal fan base by writing, recording, and releasing one song per month starting September 2014 for one year. Well, looks like they’ve accomplished that and were selling out shows even before ever having performed live. This year they plan to do some heavy touring.
Uniquely, Oh Wonder has mostly shied away from interviews, “Since we don’t love talking about ourselves, we wanted to turn the tables and become the interviewers.” They’ve created a Tumblr site where they interview the fans and followers they’ve chatted with at their shows.
However, in an interview with Digital Trends earlier this year, Anthony West reports, “We have lots of touring to do. From now until December of this year [2016]. A whole year of touring. We are coming back to the States five or six times. We are really excited to play a lot more shows and festivals. Amidst that, hopefully think about writing the next record.”
