Lately, across the country I have seen a big response to the gluten-free diet. Some claims have been made that if you remove gluten from your diet, you will lose a lot of weight. The success of the book “Wheat Belly” further enhance the claim. Some people however, suffer from Celiac Disease and cannot have any type of wheat products in their diet.
What is a gluten-free diet you might ask? Well, a gluten-free diet excludes the protein gluten. This protein can be found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye, durum, graham, spelt, kamut and commercial oats due to cross contamination in processing. Gluten causes inflammation in the small intestine of people who are diagnosed with Celiac disease. When you eat a diet which contains no gluten at all, it helps with the treatment of the disease.
To eat a gluten-free diet can be challenging to some at first, because you might feel deprived by your favorite foods such as, wheat bread, pasta ramen noodles, beer, pizza crust, granola cereal, croissant, pretzels among other food products. You might be surprised at all the options available for someone with Celiac disease or those who want to follow a gluten-free diet.
When you eat out , be aware that gluten can sneak into your food by cross contamination. For example, food that has gluten could be made in the same pot as gluten-free products and using the same oil. It’s very important to read the labels of prepared food sold in cans and even herbal teas which might contain barley. If at any time you accidentally eat a product containing gluten, you might experience abdominal pain and diarrhea if you suffer from Celiac disease.
