Are you feeling like your relationship is on a collision course to the end? Is your relationship in need of some extra storage space? Do you know the true meaning of “I need space?”

I was side-swapped by some news that a my friend and his boyfriend had broken up. I am in total shock, not because they broke-up but the reason he gave him. I am embarrassed to tell you the lame excuse he gave him. He used the classic line “I need space.” What was he thinking?

Is it possible that my bestie is clueless?. This latest discovery gave me the courage to lay this horrible excuse to rest. Plus, with a friend’s now “Lost in Space,” I felt it was my duty to clear up this misleading statement for “It’s over!”

Listen up because it’s our mission is to provide our readers the foundation to “Date Smart… Date for Success” (a motto created by Corey Wesley) and the only way you will be able to do this is when you develop the skill to read between the lines.

You may be asking yourself, “What’s wrong with telling someone you need space?” Let’s first define space, in the dictionary it is defined as a blank area, a blank character used to “separate successive words,” and the one I love the most; “the boundless regions of the infinite.” Does that sound promising? Absolutely not!

It’s a statement that is misleading and sends the wrong message, giving someone a sense of false hope. Typically when someone uses, I need space they have been planning their escape route for a while and wasn’t quite sure how to say, “It’s over!” “I want to see other people” or as I like to refer to it as the spare. The spare tire just in case all else fails. Get the point!?

What truly shocked me was his boyfriend’s behavior and how he ignored the true meaning of, “I need space”! Can you believe it, after two weeks of no contact and plenty of space, his boyfriend started hunting him down, going to his job, calling his sister, his friends, his boss, yes I said “HIS” boss to see if they had heard from him.

When someone tells you they need space it means the relationship has reached a dead-end. It does not always necessarily mean its final but for the moment its over. That means for you not to sit around waiting for someone to call you when they are ready.

When you hear that lame excuse, “I need space,” simply replace it with “It’s over!” because like in my friend’s case he is back with his previous boyfriend or moving on. I call that internal space between two people.

My suggestion, don’t wait around for someone to enjoy his or her time in space. Move on!
