The globalization of both music and social media has allowed artists to reach a broader and more diverse audience. The US has dominated the charts for decades but in recent years European artists are stealing our thunder and making an impact on both international and US soil.
It’s not unusual for European artists to stake a claim in the US to make it big. However, it’s those artists that haven’t reached complete international cross over success who become those unsung heroes. Sam Smith is just the tip of the iceberg but there are more coming.
Artists like Katy B are lurking in the shadows but are slowly making a name for themselves and giving us no reason to cry (pun intended). Kathleen Anne Brien (better know as Katy B) is an English bassist, singer and songwriter who has placed an everlasting impression on me. Her music, voice and sound is a balance of perfection; a balance between R&B, house and UK garage. I didn’t even realize I was a fan of UK garage until I was introduced to Katy B.
I am not one to compare artists because each artist is unique and offers something different to the make-up of music. However, when I examine the music industry it’s the edgier artists who gain sustainable appeal. Although Adele and Katy B have different vocal ranges and each can carry a note, it’s Katy B who is the front runner on my playlist. It’s not so much about the musicality but Katy for me has a boarder appeal. It’s an appeal that can cross over into the urban markets.
When Adele was introduced to me it took a while before I warmed up to her voice and style. Don’t get me wrong, I love Adele, her music and voice. Her style of music is classic, soulful and took some time getting used to. However, within moments of hearing the pulse and rhythm of Katy B’s voice I was instantly hooked.
Katy B has an artistic sound similar to Adele but more youthful. Katy B is a global sensation and she should not be lurking in the shadows. In my opinion, Katy B’s song Crying for No Reason is epic. It’s a song that combines electric sound, R&B and a little house to create something familiar but fresh and new.
Still and Crying for No Reason are two of my favorites. Even though, Crying for No Reason is an older track released back in 2013, it’s a track worth mentioning. It’s not only my favorite but one I listen to daily. It’s on repeat.
When I last checked the video for Crying for No Reason had over 7,196,842 views on YouTube. Katy B has a long list of hits and is an artist who deserves worldwide recognition.
