Why We All Need A Social Media Reality Check

Social media sites can be depressing because everyone else’s lives are better than yours… But are they really?

Social media is a platform to connect with others, however, it has also become a place to hide from reality. The virtual world is exciting because we get to reveal ourselves in a vision of what we want to be, are working towards, or are hiding from the truth.

Scrolling through photos, posts, and following the relationship status of those we don’t know can become more interesting than our own life. Sadly, we start to compare our lives to those we follow. Instead of celebrating our own achievements and life, we’re so wrapped up in the opinions of others that we measure our worth by how many “LIKES” we scored.

Social media has taken freedom of speech to a new level. Spreading hate, discrimination and judging others is easier when you’re sitting in the comfort of your own home.

Personally for several years I was that person scrolling through Facebook wondering why not me. Although, it was a dark period in my life social media was an escape; an escape that made my life feel less than rather than bright and hopeful.

Social media is definitely a great platform to connect but it’s important to remember that social media can be a deadly place. If you’re not careful you will find yourself comparing yourself to others, others who might be embellishing their lives.

It’s like the saying goes, “fake it until you make it” and it’s something to remember when you’re judging, doubting, or simply not being honest with yourself. Life is not always peaches and cream but honestly people are not interested in a Debbie-downer. So when you start comparing yourself to others based on Facebook, in my opinion and from personal experience it’s time for a reality check.

I loved this short video because it’s the perfect reality check.
