Fashion + Hip Hop have been synonymously linked for decades. From the Sugar Hill Gang known for their flashy, often coordinated street wear to Run DMC’s infamous leather outfits, Adidas sweat suits and coordinating hats to match. The union of fashion + hip hop has provided a musical backdrop to designers’ fashion interpretation and inspiration for musical artists to express themselves through fashion.
There have been many hip hop artists to utilize their fashions to further differentiate themselves among their peers and hip hop genius Pharrell Williams is no different. The uber-talented Mr. Williams blew onto the scene in the early 90’s. Pharrell began his career working with Teddy Riley and later became more popularly known as one-third of the group N.E.R.D.
In 2003, Pharrell launched the popular Billionaire Boys Club / Ice Cream line opening his flagship store in the SoHo district of NYC. In 2005, Pharrell was named one of Esquire’s best-dressed men. Pharrell continues to set fashion + music trends. More recently Pharrell’s fashion style was celebrated through his oversized Vivienne Westwood hat as donned at the Grammy awards. The vintage hat has become a fashion phenomenon and has raised over 45K in charitable contributions.
In addition, Pharrell was selected as the new face of Uniqlo. As the new face of Uniqlo, Pharrell will be featured in the Uniqlo re-launch campaign under the creative direction of designer Nigo founder of the legendary Japanese label BAPE. The new Uniqlo’s line features stronger cotton than normally available in Uniqlo’s regular shirts.
