The Power of Letting a Relationship Go

First off, I want to apologize to anyone who now suddenly has the song Let It Go from Frozen, stuck in their heads. (It’s still just so damn catchy).

Secondly, as the new year commences, we start making resolutions for change, adjustments, and a brand new beginning. One way of doing this is looking at our past year; the things we did (or didn’t do) and vow to make a transformation. The other way we do this is by making promises to ourselves – giving up fast food and working out more – surely settings ourselves up for failure.

Now, I have done that in the past and have found it doesn’t work. I say I am going to work out but three weeks in, the local gym is the place where I go to escape the cold and watch E! News. By February, I have completely forgotten where exactly my gym is located and I retrograde back into the same habits as I did the previous year.

But not this time. For 2015, I made a few set of resolutions that aren’t ending things, but yet, beginning them. For starters, I am going to be more open when it comes to dating.

I have spent the better part of my life looking for love in all the wrong places. From hopeless phone applications to grungy bars at 2am, and neither of them worked. Like my resolution to exercise 5 times a week, I was setting myself up for failure. I was never going to find a boyfriend if I was so intently looking for one.

The second vow I made to myself was to let things go. Whether it be arguments with friends to an issue I just have no control over, I am not going to let the small things bother me.

In using the phrase “let it go,” I am also going to let those old flames from the past disappear into the city fog. In 2014, I spent so much time saying “But what if…?” about people I used to date. I would continue to reach out to and yes, obsess over, people I had once had a connection with. Not only was this act tiring, it was also hindering me from finding someone new – someone who was different and someone who maybe I could have some sort of a relationship with.

By doing this, I have grown to accept that those guys, no matter how in love with them I thought I was, were not right for me. If they were, then they would still be here and I wouldn’t be writing this article – I would be on my honeymoon. There is a reason things never happened with these guys and realizing that and finally putting an end to my “but maybe…” has totally inspired me to live in the present.

With just a few days into the new year, I am extremely happy, satisfied and hopeful. I am no longer setting goals I have no control over and I am learning (in just a week) how much happier I am. I encourage all of you to try letting it go this year and see how good it makes you feel.

Now…quickly turn on your iPod to get another song stuck in your head for the rest of the day!
