Music feeds the soul is a statement I frequently make. It makes your spirit feel good. The vibrations, the sounds and spirit of love, life and music can always be re-lived when I hear Sylvester’s 1978 hit, ‘You Make Me Feel (Might Real).’
Although I was born in the early 70’s, when a song can span decades and touch generations it’s no wonder they’ve taken the Queen of Disco’s collection of music to off-broadway. The music, the person, and his life are true testaments we all have a purpose in life.
Today we live in an era that is closer to equality for the LGBT community. For a generation unaware of all the men and woman who paved the way for us to be free it’s important their stories and talents are passed down keeping them alive for years, centuries to come.
From the east, west, and internationally you can’t go in the world in terms of a gay bar and not hear one of Sylvester’s mega-hits. From ‘Do Ya Wanna Funk’, ‘Dance (Disco Heat)’, and ‘You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)’ these have become anthems for the LGBT community and disco lovers.
As his career was on the rise we lost a talented artist from complications of the HIV virus. It’s also important to know that Sheryl Lee Ralph one of the original Dreamgirls (1982) and a huge HIV/AIDS activist and her foundation D.I.V.A. Foundation along with AnthonyKen, LLC are the producers behind this amazing musical.
If you love Sylvester, disco music and musicals, Might Real – A Fabulous Sylvester Musical may just make you feel mighty real!

How did Mighty Real come about and why Sylvester?
Mighty Real was inspired by a TV show that came on about the life of the Original Disco Queen SYLVESTER. Watching this show, we found ourselves entranced, driven and inspired by his choice in life to be who he wanted to be regardless of any situation he had to endure. As the idea began to develop even more, we knew people would be inspired just as we were to live every moment to the fullest, so in July 2012 we decided to create a One Night Concert of his songs and his life story with a full live band and all live singing. From then on, the rest is history. Our history.
What can people expect from the show?
They can look forward to the journey of Sylvester’s entire life story from his humble beginning in Los Angeles through his transition into the San Francisco scene to his heights of his success and his demise. His incredible Classic known musical hits are interweaved throughout the entire show such as “Dance (Disco Heat)”, “Can’t Stop Dancing” and, of course, “You Are My Friend”
How are Sheryl Lee Ralph & the D.I.V.A. Foundation involved, what’s their connection to MightyReal?
Sheryl Lee Ralph came on board by us contacting her through Twitter. She had heard about it from various people, but once we reached out to her about the impact the show could bring to the world, she reached back. From then on, we discussed how the impactful the show could be on a global level not just entertainment wise, but, also, when it comes to HIV/AIDS Awareness. It just seemed to be the perfect fit.
Is the show biographic in nature or a collection of music? Do we get to learn more about the life of Sylvester?
Yes. This show brings forth the truth of Sylvester’s life by using his music to guide the audience on a journey of self discovery and resilience. You learn so much more about the Man himself as opposed just the glitz and glamour. Of course, you get all of that too and more, but we look past the man who sang in front of Two Tons o’ Fun/The Weather Girls. We bring forth the essence and evolution of a great man who lived in his truth no matter what.
What do you want people to take away from the show, is there a message?
Each person coming to the show will be encouraged to live their life to the fullest and will walk away knowing through any adversity or situation you go through, you can be just a Trailblazer just like Sylvester was. You still have the time and chance to live your best life. So, stay encouraged and COME SEE MIGHTY REAL this fall in NYC! We can’t wait to DANCE in the DISCO HEAT with you All!!
