The fall/winter months are a stressful time of the year, spending lots of time indoors, spending tons of money during the holidays and preparing big family dinners. To take time to unwind and relax, aromatherapy is an alternative treatment that’s used to make you feel good and for medicinal purpose.

Products used consist of scented candles, bubble baths, deodorizers for the home, essential oils in the bath and and in massage therapy. The term “aromatherapy” started in the early twentieth century to describe the use of essential oils in plants for their medicinal and therapeutic properties. Ancient Egyptians used these oils in embalming. Greeks and Romans, used them both therapeutically and for pleasure. The three wise men in the Bible are said to have brought gifts of precious frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus.

The benefits of aromatherapy include: sensual, to uplift, calm, stimulate, and revitalize for medicinal and healing purposes. During this winter months, aromatherapy is very beneficial after a long day.

Research shows it’s also used as a medicinal property to help clear the mind. Some of the aromatherapy oils include:

  • Peppermint, a refreshing clean scented oil, beneficial for the digestive and respiratory system. It is also reviving and can help cure fatigue, headache and migraine. I don’t take pills for my headache, I use peppermint oil to cure me, and I can tell you that it works.
  • Eucalyptus oil, another favorite of mine is an excellent remedy for sinusitis and throat infection. Diluted in carrier oil, you can dab it on your skin as an excellent insect repellant and to treat head lice.
  • Jasmine is a luxurious oil and a perfect skin balancer. A few drops in the bathwater counteract stress, fatigue, and calm dry skin, as well as aches and pains leaving you feeling uplifted and relaxed. This is one of the best aromatherapy oil to use after a long and exhausting day.
  • Lavender is one of the most widely used oils. It is healing and refreshing. It soothes sunburn, aids the healing of burns and skin injuries.
  • Clary Sage is an uplifting scent that relieves anxiety and tension. The oil is good for itchy scalp, inflamed skin and muscular aches and pains.
  • Tea Tree oil is a very antiseptic and anti fungal. It is one of the most useful oils of all and can be used undiluted. It treats cold sores, infected wounds and infectious diseases. This oil is a must have in your medicine cabinet.

These are just a few of the many aromatherapy oils and their benefits.  Try a few of these oils after a long and exhausting day, or if you feel stressed, light a candle, drop a few drops of your favorite oil in the bath and relax. Another option is to get a good massage with the oil relaxing all your achy muscles, you will soon feel refreshed.
