“Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries,” but that’s not always the case, but according to the life of Merce, it’s a happy place, until life throws you a few curveballs, but all you have to do to make it all better is break out into song and dance to live happily ever after.
Last night, I had the opportunity to attend an exclusive screening of the second season of the NYC-based, award-winning HIV+ musical comedy web series “MERCE” at the NYC LGBT Community Center. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout, it was a packed house.
Into the five minutes of the second season, everyone in the audience was laughing hysterically. The first musical number will give you “that just fucked feeling!” To understand what I’m talking about, you’ll have to watch the first episode. Initially, I was concerned I would not be able to follow the character development since I had not seen season one, but that wasn’t the case. Without much background information regarding the previous season, I was able to dive right in with everyone else.
Charles Sanchez, the Merce star and creator, is an innocently, adorable, and joyful unicorn to watch on screen. I instantly fell in love with his character, yet sometimes, overtly naive, by episode three, it’s less annoying and genuinely charming. The entire cast was fantastic! I would name them all, but there are are two that stood out.
Randall Taylor, who plays Remington Merce’s boyfriend, was my biggest distraction. The connection between these two actors was believable. I even felt guilty having dirty thoughts about Taylor. Remington’s unspoken doubt about love jumped off the screen, acting at its best.
Tyne Firmin who plays MAMA is the actor who stole the show for me. Firmin’s one-liners, facial expressions, his portrayal of an overbearing, and liberal mother was genius. By the end of the premiere, I wanted to see more and more of MAMA.
In reality, life is a bitch, but after seeing Merce, I’m going to start breaking out in song, when life throws me a curveball, to make my life just as bubbly and cheery as the character Merce did.
